nevitable events Our situation is not enough to write a story: we have just seen that that combination represents nothing more than two elements necessary to give it the impulse . The combination triggers some events. They are the events that, ultimately, trigger the story. In the novel No Country for Old Men the triggering incident is the discovery of that money and the decision to take it: here is the narrative combination. So does it coincide with the triggering incident? Yes, and it falls into the first category of triggering incidents that I illustrated a year and a half ago: “Desire or aspiration of the protagonist”.
I had given some examples of triggering incidents, or rather Special Data some examples of the protagonist's desires that would trigger the story: a fifteen year old who wants to run away from home a man who wants to marry a woman a girl who wants to become an actress a mountaineer who wants to climb Everest alone without oxygen like Messner a journalist who wants to interview the leader of a terrorist cell a woman who wants to become President of the Republic If you notice carefully, they are all pairs that trigger a series of actions : the fifteen year old runs away from home: what will happen? His parents report his disappearance, the police investigate, they investigate too, he will have to find a refuge and get by.
A man courts a woman because he is in love with her: what will happen? He will ask her out, she will declare herself, receive a certain response and behave accordingly. A girl wants to be an actress: she attends an acting course, responds to job adverts looking for actors, takes auditions, etc. A mountaineer wants to emulate Messner: he trains, leaves for Nepal, starts climbing, the first problems arise, etc. A journalist wants to interview the leader of the terrorist cell: he goes there, makes contacts, is taken for a spy and almost killed, manages to escape, etc. A deputy wants to become the first President of the Italian Republic and will have to clash with the prejudices of her colleagues and will look for allies in other parties. I wrote the first things that came to mind: but I believe they are logical events that start from the situation we have in mind for our story. Logical and credible events.
